Ingredients for 6 people:

150 grams of Japanese sushi rice, 3 sheets of nori (seaweed), 200 grams of salmon, 1 avocado, wasabi, 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar, ½ teaspoon of salt

A bamboo mat should also be provided to easily roll your makis. You can easily find them in stores that sell Japanese products.

If you don’t have one on hand and can’t find one, you can still make your sushi at home, but rolling your makis will be a bit more complicated, though far from impossible.

Steps to successfully make your homemade sushi every time:

Step 1: Cook the rice

To make your rice perfect for use in your homemade maki recipe, you need to rinse it well before cooking. The best thing is to rinse it 3 times.

Once your rice is cooked, drain it for at least 30 minutes before continuing with the preparation of your sushi.

Step 2: Mix your rice with rice vinegar

In a saucepan, mix the rice vinegar with the sugar and salt. Heat until the salt and sugar are dissolved. Then mix this preparation before continuing with the design of your makis.

Step 3: Prepare the filling

Now that the main ingredient of your sushi, the rice, is ready, it’s time to go for a filling. For this, cut thin strips of salmon and avocado. We won’t give you dimensions for the strips (we’re not rolling on widths and lengths) but let’s say they shouldn’t be too thick or too thin. It’s a matter of taste and presentation.

If you have some freedom with the size of the strips, when it comes to salmon, one thing is essential: delicacy and hygiene. To cut nice slices of salmon, you need to be precise and use a sharp knife so as not to damage the precious fish.

In terms of hygiene, it is of course essential to have perfectly clean hands and to cut the fish on a previously cleaned surface since you are working with raw fish.

Finally, feel free to let your creativity shine at this stage and add ingredients that you would like: cucumber, crab sticks, tuna, scallop shells…

Step 4: Place the ingredients on the nori sheets

Before starting this step, know that to be able to roll your makis easily afterward, it is important to leave one centimeter at the top of your nori sheet so that it sticks well and the sushi is presentable.

For this fourth and second-to-last step, place a sheet of nori (smooth side up) on the bamboo mat and spread a thin layer of rice. To prevent the rice from sticking to your skin when you spread it, remember to wet your fingers before this operation.

Once the rice is spread, it’s time to lay down the strips of salmon and avocado. Then, spread a bit of wasabi according to your taste. Warning: wasabi is a very strong condiment, so make sure not to overdo it, or you’ll have a fiery mouth!

Step 5: Roll and cut the makis

This is the moment that some dread, but don’t worry, with a bit of delicacy and attention, this step is nothing insurmountable! It’s important to tightly roll the nori sheet with the filling as you roll it up.

If you proceed as shown in the image just above, there will be no problem; your makis will look just like those from your favorite Japanese restaurant, and you can taste them and lick your fingers once your sushi is done because they were really too good!
