How to Change a Car Clutch?

Clutch Disassembly

During your long and happy love story with your car, it is likely that your car will ask you to change its clutch. This may take the form of a simple replacement of the worn disc or a complete upgrade to a stronger model… More than in any other case, safety must be your primary concern, both under the car and behind the wheel! So in this first part, we will look at the disassembly of the clutch system.

Choosing a clutch is a serious matter.

Unless you opt for a straightforward renewal of the original mechanism, you will need to do some research to find the right product. The first criterion to consider is the quality of the clutch. Your safety will directly depend on this! No compromises can be made here. The flywheel in particular is a sensitive part (you don’t have to change it, but when the gearbox is on the ground, you might as well take the opportunity to do it all!). It spins at high speeds, and the slightest problem (poor positioning, rough tightening, etc.) generates vibrations that can in turn lead to the breaking of components. At best, you end up with a pile of aluminum, at worst, with real bodily injuries! Next, make sure that the clutch is strong enough to hold the power of your engine and not slip under throttle pressure. As always, who can do more can do less. Be sure to choose a product that matches your usage. If you are unfortunate enough to install a non-damped three-pad metallic disc while spending most of your time in traffic jams, expect to find yourself in a psychiatric hospital!

Note that there are two types of clutches :

the “push” (classic) and the “pull”. Before any intervention, make sure you know the type of your choice! Pull-type mechanisms, often found on Impreza or Lancer Evo, have a special disassembly procedure that requires disengaging the fork in order to remove the gearbox. If you miss this detail, you end up spending hours pulling the gearbox like a donkey without understanding what is wrong!

In this tutorial, we are using a lift. This strays a bit from the “do it like a pro” spirit, but it must be admitted that with a longitudinal gearbox, it is still much easier! Let’s remember that there are several garages in France that allow you to rent lifts, tools, etc., and sometimes even get advice from a mechanic! Rest assured that it is quite possible to drop a gearbox using simple automatic candles! Just make sure they are strong and stable.
